Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has evolved over thousands of years. TCM practitioners use various psychological and/or physical approaches (such as acupuncture and tai chi) as well as herbal products to address health problems. Today in China, but also in the rest of the world, there are plenty of structures that offer a traditional Chinese medicine course.

Doing traditional Chinese medicine course (TCM) offers a range of personal and professional benefits. A program in TCM gives students a broad base of knowledge, from diagnostic skills to an understanding of the methodologies of therapies used by the ancient practitioners of it.

Recently, the number of international students who want to obtain credentials in traditional Chinese medicine from China has increased. The Chinese government has even introduced a 15-year plan to ensure the continued growth of the TCM sector, aiming for it to provide 30 percent of the medical industry’s gross output by 2020. But which are today the best universities that offer a traditional Chinese medicine course? Here we have our list of best program in TMC. 

1. Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM)

Established in 1956, the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) was one of the first four TCM colleges across China.

The university offers a 5-year program (3 semesters a year). The program includes classroom lectures, group discussions, simulated demonstration, practical training and social practice. 

2. Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (AHTMC)

Anhui university offers bachelor’s degrees in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Osteology, Rehabilitation and Nursing. Currently there are nearly full-time 13,205 students attending the traditional Chinese medicine course at Anhui University.

Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine owns 2 affiliated hospitals of the provincial level, 1 TCM clinic and 1 hospital specialized in the combination of Chinese and Western medicine

3. Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

This university has accepted foreign students from 32 countries and offer a large variety of programs, including a Traditional Chinese medicine course, Chinese Pharmacy and Acupuncture & Moxibustion. It has 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 12 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 19 teaching hospitals, 38 training hospitals. The 1st affiliated hospital is the State TCM Clinical Research Base of Diabetes. 

4. Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

This university was founded in 1958, listed as one of the key state construction TCM higher-learning institutes in 1978.  It has 21 undergraduate programs, involving the fields of medicine, sciences, humanities, engineering and management. Meanwhile, it has 3 first-rate doctoral degree authorization disciplines, including traditional Chinese medicine and combination of TCM and western medicine.

5. Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (ZCMU)

This university has set up 1 National TCM Clinical Research Center, 3 SATCM (the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine) key laboratories, and 1 drug clinical trial body (adaptable to 12 majors) of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA). The university also has 10 Class 3 laboratories for Chinese medicine study.
